La Scala Takes a Big Step With a Small Audience The New York Times

The theatre underwent a major renovation from early 2002 to late 2004. The theatre closed following the traditional 7 December 2001 season-opening performances of Otello, which ran through December. From 19 January 2002 to November 2004, the opera company transferred to the new Teatro degli Arcimboldi, built in the Pirelli-Bicocca industrial area 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from the city center. La Scala hosted the first productions of many famous operas and had a special relationship with Verdi. However, for several years, Verdi did not allow his work to be played here, as some of his music had been modified (he said "corrupted") by the orchestra. This dispute originated in a disagreement over the production of his Giovanna d'Arco in 1845; however, the composer later conducted his Requiem there on 25 May 1874.

Filarmonica della Scala

Teatro alla Scala was built to replace another theater, which was unfortunately completely destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century. Milan has therefore always been the location for opera; only a church had to make way for the new theater to be built. Famous operas have been performed here for the first time in this theatre, such as Verdi's Otello, Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Rossini's La Cenerentola and Bellini's Norma. Start times and running times for each performance are provided in the listings for operas and ballets in the Season section. ROME (AP) — Milan’s La Scala, one of the world’s most prestigious and historic opera houses, has named Fortunato Ortombina as its new director.

Great Performances for Children

Teatro alla Scala offers a greater accessibility service aimed at people with visual and hearing impairment. Programmes for current and past seasons can be purchased from the La Scala Shop. Multilingual electronic librettos are available free of charge in the auditorium. You’ll find us in the Piazza della Scala square opposite the Palazzo Marino, Milan’s city hall. Over the past two decades, La Scala, completed by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini in 1778, has experienced its most profound changes since after World War II, when it suffered severe damage from Allied bombing raids. Roberto Bolle, Carla Fracci, Alessandra Ferri , Liliana Cosi - the list of stellar steppers goes on and on, from history to the present day.

La Scala, Milan: A Legendary Opera House Celebrating Artistic Excellence

For the most recent work, we’ve added a 17-story structure [six floors are underground] parallel to La Scala on the Via Verdi. At the base of this tower is an orchestra practice room, and on top is an airy dance studio. In between is needed functional space like offices, storage and rehearsal space. Throughout its history, the academy has been resonsible for a new dawn not only for opera, but for acting and stage-craft too. A famous detail of the theater is the seating area high up in the gods, the loggione, which housed less wealthy patrons and broadened the reach and appeal of opera beyond the "elite" class. Don Carlo, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly and with Lluis Pasqual's staging, will open a rich season with more than 250 performances for a wide and diversified audience.

How to reach La Scala Theatre

The new theatre was built on the former location of the church of Santa Maria della Scala, from which the theatre gets its name. Over a period of two years, the theatre was completed by Pietro Marliani, Pietro Nosetti, and Antonio and Giuseppe Fe. The theatre had a total of "3,000 or so" seats[6] organized into 678 pit-stalls, arranged in six tiers of boxes above which is the 'loggione' or two galleries. Its stage is one of the largest in Italy (16.15m d x 20.4m w x 26m h). La Scala's season opens on 7 December, Saint Ambrose's Day, the feast day of Milan's patron saint.

One had its head torn off as the violent accompaniment to a coloratura tour-de-force. Moments earlier, the backdrop had parted to reveal an entire wall of mutilated bears, clumsily taped back together. And, in one of the most disturbing moments of all, a human-scale teddy wandered on playing an accordion like a cameo in a horror film, before eventually removing its own oversized head to pick a fight with one of the singers.

Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown.

Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says.

The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones.

Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space.

Lastly, Europe needs to completely halt purchases of Russian oil and gas, and there needs  to be greater enforcement of the oil price cap as Russian ships keep bypassing the system. The  cap could also be raised considering it costs a Russian monopoly $20-$25 to produce a barrel. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.

The plot of Full Moon in March, meanwhile, made sense on paper (a quest piece involving a swineherd as the wannabe suitor of a queen) but in performance the libretto – adapted from a WB Yeats play – verges on impenetrable. The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. Valentina has always been drawn to designing gorgeous spaces and experiences for others. As a child, she aspired to be a buyer and designer (talk about dreams coming true!).

Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. The real weirdness, needless to say, was hard-baked into each piece long before these stagings added neon accessories and boundless physical energy. Both are rarities – ROH director of opera Oliver Mears staged the Martinů’s UK premiere himself back in 2007, while this is only the second UK production of Harbison’s chamber opera – and you can see why. The sequence of events in Larmes de Couteau is somewhat clearer, albeit in an explicitly surreal vein (“It’s very French, isn’t it?” said the woman sitting next to me to her companion come the interval).

The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home.

Hen House Chef: Five Questions with Chef JeraVonte Twillie

hen house memphis

We see the modern food truck as a way to do the same – but with a culinary chef at the wheel. Hen House’s fixed and seasonal menus are also inspired by locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients with the goal of treating guests to the truest flavors and nutritious meal options. An amazing dining experience in California inspired Michaela Dockery to bring a similar concept to Memphis.

What is your favorite part about being The Head Chef at Hen House?

Find out more about her wine bar concept that's opening in six short weeks. I wanted California flair and elevated Southern comfort to collide. That’s exactly what our Executive Chef Matt Schweitzer has created for us. Matt is young, creative, and passionate about creating this food experience for Memphis. We will have lots of family-share small plate options, but also the option to upsize to a full entrée.

Food,

Our seasonal ingredients come from local, sustainable sources and contribute flavors that, quite simply, exceed our guests’ expectations. Wes Anderson could have concocted the aesthetic of Vice & Virtue, a blend of warmth and whimsy that’s an ideal fit for downtown Memphis’s Arrive Hotel (the former home of the Memphis College of Art’s graduate program). The coffee shop and roaster prioritizes specialty-grade coffees, selecting blends from around the world and partnering with local companies to create unique releases.

Wine,

Jeanes will have ingredients from local farms like Marmilu Farms and Old World Farms. Mendenhall Road, from Comeback Coffee, where he developed its food program and worked as its chef. Prior to that, he had been the chef de cuisine at P.O. He quickly became known for the cake-like herb biscuits he baked for P.O. Those same biscuits had been the foundation for Kinfolk, a small food stand Jeanes ran in South Main Market before it closed.

We also have an incredible mixologist Tony Nguyen, who is creating a very impressive cocktail menu. The menu for Hen House may have changed since the last user update. Jeanes said he is grateful for the kitchen team at The Hen House and how smoothly the transition has gone. “The small size of our kitchen allows us to make use of local products,” he said.

The walls are lined with an eclectic mix of art work from the Dockerys' home as well as from close friends. But more cozy lounge seating is on the way for the new year. The wine cellar, which features more than 350 bottles, is a glass-walled room that will host private dining experiences as well as tasting events. The couple decided to make their dream a reality and open their own spot.

Wine, cocktails and more

He said he has also partnered with local food artisans to provide ingredients for dishes. Dockery said Jeanes’ menu focuses on locally raised ingredients and partnerships with local food artisans. “It’s the vision I had for the menu originally,” she said. Shrimp and Grits, Beef Wellington, Burrata Salads and Charcuterie and Cheese plates are just a few of the options to expect. Sommelier Caleb Knight will host regular wine tastings. Off the main dining room is “The Bubble Room.” This smaller dining room is dedicated to sparkling wines, with a wall devoted to Veuve Clicquot French champagne.

Once a month we will have brown bag tastings, which are a total blast and can be pretty surprising once you unveil the bottles. Last but not least, we have a great wine club to roll out. We will have pick-up parties for wine club members once a month a few days before we do the actual tasting — the option of virtual tasting or in-house tasting — and pairings. I always wanted to become an author and maybe a movie director but I put that dream to the side when I was maybe 10 years old. I watched my great-grandmother, who is still with us, put smiles on everyone’s face in our neighborhood with her cooking. If there was a question on who was my inspiration and who is the best chef ever I would hands down say her.

She explained that as a wine bar, she wants the food to pair well with wine and spirits. The menu will include a large selection of family-style shareable dishes for those stopping by before dinner, as well as a selection of entrees for those wanting dinner. The team members have spent the past several months educating themselves on the wine selections and how to serve wines. “People will be coming for an experience from start to finish,” said Michaela of her commitment to staff training and why she kept The Hen House small. You can check out Chef JeraVonte’s delicious cuisine Monday through Saturday at Hen House Wine Bar (@henhousememphis).

The Hen House wine bar officially opens to the public on Jan. 16 and is hosting private events now. Award-winning chefs Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman (Andrew Michael, Hog & Hominy) are native Memphians from large Italian families. Catherine and Mary’s — aptly named for the duo’s nonne — is a natural extension of the dishes they grew up with. Ticer and Hudman have also recently opened Bishop’s at the Central Station Hotel, which leans heavily into French cuisine and techniques. Jeanes quietly started at the restaurant in mid July and now has officially debuted his new menus.

Abuduhair began as a home baker and slowly grew her retail business with standout items like French macarons, which come in flavors such as wedding cake, orange blossom, lavender, double salted caramel, and red velvet. You can find plenty of benches and nooks outside in Overton Square to enjoy your desserts. With everything being said, one of Chef JeraVonte’s newest reasons for doing what he does is for his soon-to-be son Jesse Twillie, due February 10th. Not only do I wanna become a great chef for the city of Memphis, I also want to become a great father and make him proud. When Michaela Dockery and her husband, Dee, would travel to the Wine Country in California, they often found themselves asking, “Why don’t we have tastings rooms like this at home? ” The couple decided to make their dream a reality and open their own spot.

Even at this early stage, though, it’s clear the bar is a labor of love for husband-and-wife team DJ and Jamie Naylor. The lunch and dinner menus include traditional Irish dishes like bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, and beer-battered fish and chips, while the extensive whiskey list wanders beyond Ireland to include North America, Scotland, and Japan. End your meal with a helping of warm Irish bread pudding or Irish tea creme brulee. At Flight, wine and spirits don’t have the monopoly on smaller sampling sizes — dinner plates get the tasting treatment. But Flight takes the guessing game out of ordering by perfectly portioning three distinct dishes for you in one order called a, you guessed it, “flight.” Like the soup flight, with lobster bisque, seafood gumbo, and a soup of the day. Or the steak entree flight with bison ribeye, elk tenderloin, and a Boursin-stuffed filet.

For a special occasion, reserve one of the tables or booths on the balcony overlooking Main Street and cap off the night with the decadent chocolate flight. Alcenia’s is the only eatery in Memphis where you and everyone in your party can expect a hug from the owner. But the warm hospitality isn’t the only reason this soul-food destination — in downtown Memphis’s Pinch District, just around the corner from the giant pyramid-shaped Bass Pro Shops — ought to be on your must-visit list. Alcenia’s is a textbook example of a simple, meat-and-three diner done well. The specialties include fried chicken and catfish, pork chops, waffles, fried green tomatoes, and hot-water cornbread, along with trusty sides like cabbage, mac and cheese, and green beans.

Bringing The Hen House to life has been a labor of love for Michaela, from start to finish. Guests can choose to have a single glass or order a flight of wine in tasting portions. This may seem like an odd recommendation, but a visit to the women’s restroom is a must for the ladies. The tastings will be ticketed events and will cover a wide variety of topics to broaden the palates of The Hen House’s clientele. The Hen House is a bright and welcoming space, with soaring exposed beam ceilings.

To understand the food community in Memphis, it helps to start with a wider view of this entrepreneurial city. It launched music icons like Elvis, Al Green, and Three 6 Mafia, and it was the birthplace of corporations such as FedEx and Holiday Inn. While Memphis may be synonymous with traditions like blues and barbecue to the rest of the world, residents understand it’s an ideal place for anyone with a big idea to start something new. The pace of new enterprises rarely falters as people open mom-and-pop shops all the time. Even during the pandemic, restaurateurs continued introducing new concepts to the Memphis food scene. We have been tasting for months and months and have worked really hard on creating an offering that has something for everyone.

When someone thinks of Memphis from a culinary standpoint they think of our delicious BBQ but that is something I would like to change. Though that isn’t a bad thing at all because yes we know how to make some damn good BBQ, nevertheless, we also have some of the best overall foods and chefs America has to offer. I have been honored to learn and be taught by some of the best around here in my years in school and still to this day continue to grow and pick the brains of our local chefs so that I can become the best Chef I can be.

What is your favorite part about being The Head Chef at Hen House?

I wanted to once again have something for everyone. If you’re vegan, keto, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc., we’ve got you. We will also have private tasting experiences available to book in our glass wine cellar, which will be loads of fun for everyone.

Café tables and sofas create multiple dining spots for patrons. A large bar is a centerpiece that is sure to be a popular gathering spot for couples once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Always work on your inside more than your outside. Now that I am able to be active for the time being, my rule is that I must always work my inside out first, and longer than my outside.

Equal parts Crescent City native and Memphis booster, English has earned tons of local and national acclaim.

I wanted the list to be diverse, delicious, and unique. We will have plenty of familiar wines, but we also will have many wines you have never heard of. You may only drink one specific pinot, but our hope is to get you to try something new. I want to show our guests that good wine doesn’t mean the bottle has to be expensive. Yes, some of my favorite bottles are a bit pricey, but I have so many wines that I have discovered that blow you away when you see how inexpensive the bottles can be. It’s all about the quality of the fruit, how the wine is made, how much love goes into it, and how closely the process is watched.

I think that we would have so many more people drinking and experiencing wine if it wasn’t so intimidating. There is SO much to learn about wine and so much wine to try. It can be really overwhelming, that’s for sure, and it is hard knowing where to start.
