To understand the food community in Memphis, it helps to start with a wider view of this entrepreneurial city. It launched music icons like Elvis, Al Green, and Three 6 Mafia, and it was the birthplace of corporations such as FedEx and Holiday Inn. While Memphis may be synonymous with traditions like blues and barbecue to the rest of the world, residents understand it’s an ideal place for anyone with a big idea to start something new. The pace of new enterprises rarely falters as people open mom-and-pop shops all the time. Even during the pandemic, restaurateurs continued introducing new concepts to the Memphis food scene. We have been tasting for months and months and have worked really hard on creating an offering that has something for everyone.

When someone thinks of Memphis from a culinary standpoint they think of our delicious BBQ but that is something I would like to change. Though that isn’t a bad thing at all because yes we know how to make some damn good BBQ, nevertheless, we also have some of the best overall foods and chefs America has to offer. I have been honored to learn and be taught by some of the best around here in my years in school and still to this day continue to grow and pick the brains of our local chefs so that I can become the best Chef I can be.

I wanted to once again have something for everyone. If you’re vegan, keto, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc., we’ve got you. We will also have private tasting experiences available to book in our glass wine cellar, which will be loads of fun for everyone.

Café tables and sofas create multiple dining spots for patrons. A large bar is a centerpiece that is sure to be a popular gathering spot for couples once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Always work on your inside more than your outside. Now that I am able to be active for the time being, my rule is that I must always work my inside out first, and longer than my outside.

It’s a South Memphis institution, having served staples like vegetable plates, hamburgers, and turkey and dressing to the community from the corner of Walker and Mississippi Boulevard since 1946. Civil rights luminaries of the ’60s frequented the restaurant, including Martin Luther King Jr. When A-listers passed through town — people like Al Green, Elvis Presley, Ike and Tina Turner, and so many others over the years — more often than not, they made a beeline here.

He is a 2016 graduate of LeCole Culinaire Memphis. I wanted the list to be diverse, delicious, and unique. We will have plenty of familiar wines, but we also will have many wines you have never heard of. You may only drink one specific pinot, but our hope is to get you to try something new. I want to show our guests that good wine doesn’t mean the bottle has to be expensive. Yes, some of my favorite bottles are a bit pricey, but I have so many wines that I have discovered that blow you away when you see how inexpensive the bottles can be. It’s all about the quality of the fruit, how the wine is made, how much love goes into it, and how closely the process is watched.

He first opened Iris off Overton Square in Memphis’s Midtown neighborhood in 2008, before moving his venerable fine-dining concept to a larger space (formerly home to Grove Grill) in 2022. I think that we would have so many more people drinking and experiencing wine if it wasn’t so intimidating. There is SO much to learn about wine and so much wine to try. It can be really overwhelming, that’s for sure, and it is hard knowing where to start.

Due to smaller batches, they are able to really give attention to their wine. This past year I collaborated with three winemakers I met in California, and we produced three different wines that I cannot wait to share with our guests! What an experience it was to walk through a vineyard at 4 a.m., watch the fruit be harvested, stomp on it a few hours later, and watch it go into the press. It really gives you a whole new respect for winemakers and what they do.
